To give complete access to Buddha’s teachings and the Karma Kagyu teachings of each lineage , and for the welfare of all sentient beings, Choje Lama Phuntsok and Lama Jachen–la worked tirelessly to establish the Karma Lekshey Ling Buddhist College at Swoyambhu, Kathmandu. It began as a Junior College which also cared for a wealth of texts and scriptures, and to make sure quotations from them were correct.
1992
To complete the Buddhist education an advanced Senior College was added.
1998
To solidify the teaching of Buddhist texts in the Kagyu realm, Choje Lama Phuntsok initiated the excellent system of the Kagyu Winter Debating Ceremony at Karma Lekshey Ling, which opened a further path to Buddhist teaching. Making these debates more demanding we invited Tulkus, Khenpos, and Acharyas from various Buddhist Colleges in India and Nepal to attend the Debate Ceremonies, which were praised by His Holiness, the 17th Karmapa: The Debating Ceremony has promoted the wealth and depth of Buddhism as a whole, which is a remarkable achievement.
The 4th Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, with great compassion & kindness, attended the first Kagyu Debating Ceremony, which very much helped to permanently establish this kind of dharma conference. In the first annual debate, Khenchen Trangu Rinpoche taught the meaning of “Dictionary of the Ocean of Quantitative Reasonings”, the theory of Madhyamaka, and about the importance and merits of the Kagyu Debate Ceremony. Khenchen Tsultrim Gyatso Rinpoche gaveteachings on quantitative reasonings from the“Song of Realisation of Milarepa” and on the good traditional rules of the Kagyu lineage. From that time on, the groundwork of the Kagyu debating scriptures was laid. For a period of one month, Khenpos from various Buddhist academies give lectures to the monks. Hundreds of monks discuss the scriptures with each other. With any first annual debates on scriptures, bright lights of Dharma are litin the hearts of the monksgreatly benefiting from a deeper understanding of many reasonings.
1999
The Karma Lekshey Ling Buddhist College sponsored the second Annual Kagyu Debate Ceremony, where important debates and discussions were conducted on: teaching, debating, and composing. In comparison to the first Annual Debate, we paid more attention to the scriptures of the Kagyu lineage as a base for debating. Monks with a sharp intelligence were able to clearly understand the teachings and reasonings, and even monks with medium intelligence made some progress. The second Annual Debate Ceremony ended with most of the monks having attained different degrees of progress in learning the Dharma. Since then the Annual Debate Ceremony has taken place uninterruptedly like the flow of water of the Ganges River. In the future, although the monastery and the Buddhist College operate separately, the monks spend a long time living and studying together. Eventually, the sound of the ritual instruments in the monastery and the first Buddhist College disturbed the learning environment of the monks so much the principal decided to relocate the monks to a quieter place.
2001
In order to allow the monks to study in a quieter environment, the principal found a new place near the old college and began to build new houses for the Lekshey Ling Buddhist College.

About ninety-five monks relocated from the old college to the new college to continue their studies. At that time, the conditions and equipment of the college were not perfect. The monks studied under poor conditions, which were very difficult to live with. At that time, blackouts in Nepal were very common. There was frequent power–off in the evenings, and monks had to study using candles. See the college from possessing nothing to the present Lekshey Ling Buddhist College.

With the help of the Buddhist College, they can come here to study and we provide food, accommodation and education for free. It is the first non-for-profit and government-registered Primary school in Nepal. The courses are the same as the other public schools. Our curriculum includes Nepalese, English, Mathematics, and Common Studies. They also must learn Tibetan.
